Should I repair or replace my boiler?
When a boiler breaks down, the big question is whether to fix it or replace it. There's no single right answer, but these questions usually make it clear.
How old is it?
Most boilers last 10 to 15 years. A boiler under 8 years old is almost always worth repairing, especially if it's still under warranty. Over 15, parts get harder to find and breakdowns get more frequent.
How much is the repair?
A common rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than about a third of the price of a new boiler, and the boiler is over 10 years old, replacing it is often better value. Typical repairs cost £150 to £450, while a new combi supplied and fitted usually costs £1,500 to £3,500.
How often is it breaking down?
One repair in several years is normal. Two or three call-outs in a winter means more are likely, and the costs add up quickly.
Is it efficient?
Older non-condensing boilers waste a lot more gas than modern condensing ones. Replacing a very old boiler can noticeably lower your gas bills, which helps pay back the cost over time.
Ask for both prices
A good engineer will tell you honestly whether a repair is worth it. Ask for the repair price and a replacement quote, so you can compare them side by side.
