Boiler not working? 6 checks before you call an engineer
If your boiler has stopped, run through these checks first. Some of them fix the problem on the spot, and the rest give the engineer useful information when they call you back.
1. Is there power?
Check the boiler's display or lights are on. If not, look at the fused spur switch near the boiler (usually a switch on the wall with a small fuse) and check your consumer unit for a tripped switch.
2. Is the gas on?
Try the hob if you have a gas cooker. If that won't light either, the problem is your gas supply, not the boiler. Check your meter has credit if it's prepay. If you smell gas, stop and call 0800 111 999.
3. What does the pressure gauge say?
Most combi boilers need 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. Below 1 and the boiler may lock out. See our guide on why a boiler loses pressure.
4. Are the thermostat and timer asking for heat?
Turn the room thermostat up a few degrees above the room temperature and check the timer or app is in an "on" period. Smart thermostats sometimes lose Wi-Fi and stop calling for heat.
5. Is it freezing outside?
In a cold snap, the most common fault on Tyneside is a frozen condensate pipe. Our guide shows how to thaw a frozen condensate pipe safely.
6. Is there a fault code?
Write down any code on the display. Then press reset once. If the fault comes back, don't keep resetting it. See our guide to common boiler fault codes.
Still not working?
Tell us your postcode and the fault code, and a local Gas Safe registered engineer will call you back. Never take the boiler casing off yourself: only a Gas Safe registered engineer can legally work on gas appliances.
Need it sorted? No heating or hot water in Newcastle typically costs £80 to £300. A local engineer will give you a price before starting.
