What to expect
Over the years, rust and debris collect inside radiators and pipes as a thick black sludge. It settles at the bottom of radiators, clogs valves and the boiler's heat exchanger, and makes the whole system work harder for less heat. Radiators that stay cold at the bottom, black water when you bleed one, and a boiler that bangs or rumbles are the usual signs.
A power flush pumps water and a cleaning chemical through the system at high speed to loosen the sludge, then flushes it out. Most homes take a day. A magnetic filter fitted afterwards catches new debris before it reaches the boiler. Boiler makers also expect the old system to be cleaned when a new boiler goes in, and a power flush is one way to do it.
Typical cost in Newcastle: £400 to £800. Your engineer confirms the price before starting.

Power flush: common questions
Can't see your question? Ring 07380 307279 or ask for a call back.
How do I know if I need a power flush?
Radiators that are warm at the top but cold at the bottom, black or brown water when you bleed one, cold spots that keep coming back, and a boiler that bangs or rumbles all point to sludge. An engineer can check a sample of the water before you decide.
How long does a power flush take?
Most homes take a day. A big house with 11 or more radiators can take up to two days.
How much does a power flush cost?
Typically £400 to £800, mostly depending on how many radiators you have. A flat with four radiators sits at the bottom of that range and a four-bedroom house with 15 at the top. Some firms add VAT on top.
Is a power flush always needed?
No. If only one or two radiators are affected, taking them off and flushing them out may be enough, and a gentler chemical clean costs less. A good engineer will tell you if a full flush isn't worth it.
