Common boiler fault codes and what they mean
A fault code tells you, and your engineer, roughly where the problem is. Codes differ between makes and models, so always check your boiler's manual. These are some of the most common ones on boilers found in Newcastle homes.
Ignition and flame faults
These mean the boiler tried to light and couldn't. Common causes are a frozen condensate pipe, no gas supply, or a faulty ignition part.
- Worcester Bosch: EA
- Vaillant: F28 or F29
- Baxi: E133
- Ideal: L2 or F2
What you can do: check the gas is on (try the hob), check the condensate pipe isn't frozen, then reset once. If the code returns, you need an engineer.
Low water pressure
- Ideal: F1
- Vaillant: F22
- Baxi: E119
What you can do: top up the pressure to about 1.2 bar using the filling loop. If it keeps dropping, there's a leak or a failing part. Read why a boiler loses pressure.
Overheating and circulation faults
Codes like Vaillant F75 (pump or pressure sensor) and Baxi E110 (overheat) usually point to a pump problem, a blockage, or air in the system. These need an engineer.
Reset once, not repeatedly
Pressing reset over and over can make some faults worse. If one reset doesn't clear it, note the code and get a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at it. Giving them the code over the phone helps them bring the right part, which can save you a second visit.
Need it sorted? Boiler repair in Newcastle typically costs £150 to £450. A local engineer will give you a price before starting.
